Hello all,

For past couple of months I have been trying to differentiate play growl vs. aggressive growl. But I am getting so much contradicting information.

If your dog growls (playfully or aggressively), can you pls help me with this research by sending me the links to your video & mentioning if its play or aggressive growl. When recording the video try to cover the whole body of dog.

The reason why I am asking this is I volunteer at one of the shelters and we get lots of dogs. It will really help me if I can differentiate different kind of growls by either listening to growl or by reading the body language of dogs.

Thanks so much for your help!!
PS: I would really appreciate if you can send the link of video or video itself to me rather than description. Thanks again!!

stiffening of the body, snarled lips and aggressive staring are signs of aggressive growling

not many dogs growl when playing

As a rule of thumb, a dog will usually play growl when it is tugging, and have a real growl when it is standing over a food bowl.

You are looking at the wrong part of the dog’s communication. Dogs are nonverbal animals. The growl is the least important part- the real warnings come from the dog’s body language.

My Border Collie growls so much when she is playing that she really does sound like an extremely vicious dog. I play games with her by reaching for a toy that she has between her paws. She growls, but her body language tells me she is merely playing and that I shouldn’t take the growling seriously.

If a dog lowers itself and growls while wagging it’s towl thats a happy growl. If its still, hair raised, nd bearing its teeth, its an aggressive growl
