I’m 17 and I have an artsy personality…not stuck up or anything…but I do enjoy intellectual things. The problem is that I’m not like most kids my age…I’m different and I’m starting to feel like a freak. EVERYONE I know likes drinking, video games, dating…etc…
But I just like things like sitting on the porch with a cup of tea…learning a new language like sign language…going to church…playing scrabble…or going to Barnes and Nobles to meet for the newest books coming out.I mean I feel so different I’m not like ANY of my peers…and I hate myself for that. I want to fit in and to be just NORMAL…
My mom says I’m "odd" and "unique" but I’m a freak…I just want to meet others like me and who like to do the things that I like to do and I just want them to be people like me. How do I meet people like me? Where do I find them? I don’t have a car right now and I’ve never really been great at making friends…so…. I don’t know what to do and I hope that one day I can find a guy like me…one who doesn’t just judge a girl by her face or her body, but by who she is and what she’s going to leave behind in the world that’s wonderful when she dies…*sigh What do I do? Please, help me.
You are NOT a freak! I wasn’t so different thirty years ago.
I know you said you aren’t so big on making friends, but you’ve a great potential resource at your fingertips – the Net. Interest groups, interest sites are all over the place. You may not meet people face to face for a while, but you can establish contact with people of like mind, and even by email that’s much more satisfying than feeling alone. I joined a writers’ site a few years ago and it’s been wonderful. I never expected to meet many of the friends I made there (I live in Australia and most of my friends are American) but fortune has turned and I’ll be in LA to meet a bunch of ‘em soon. So don’t give up, use those wits and seek out people with the same sort of interests as you have.
You don’t mention whether you’re going to uni (college?) or not – if you are, there may well be student groups there that you could join. At any rate it’ll get you a wider acquaintance.
Good luck and you go on being you!
