The woman might just have transferred her attention to the dog because she is lonely and in mourning. She might not handle the dog as well as the husband, hence the leash. She might not have the energy to play with or walk the dog, maybe the husband did, hence the dog's weight gain. The both of them are undergoing a major transition in light of a recent death.
