here is my paper :
After September 11, 2001, the West Started to question Islam and the Islamic society more than ever did. People Started to Search for explanations of what causes people to commit such acts against civilians. The West started to question everything relates to the Islamic Culture. The space between these two societies started to get bigger. Americans started to blame a lot of accidents on Middle Eastern people. On the other hand, the war on terror that George W. Bosh started in the Middle East made the situation even worst. The conflict that people are witnessing around the world is not about the teaching of Islam. It is about how people understand the teaching of Islam. The teachings of Islam are reasonable and understandable except the Story that the Qur’an claims about Jesus Christ. But, individuals, and some Islamic groups, such as Osama bin laden and the Qaida, made Islam look evil to the West.
There is no doubt that the laws Islam Follows could be strange to Westerns such as the Jihad. The west understands the word Jihad as what Osama bin Laden has taught it in his videos on Aljazeera TV. On the other hand, the Jihad in the eyes of a Muslim is different from what Osama bin laden taught. The real meaning of Jihad according to Aslan is “The word Jihad literally means ‘a Struggle’ ‘a striving’ or ‘a great effort’ ” (Aslan, 81). Aslan explains Jihad as two types: the greater Jihad and the lesser Jihad. The greater Jihad is basically the internal struggle and the soul fighting sins. Lesser jihad is the violent struggle. It is to fight in the name of god but not to start a war. Mohammad never liked to start a war, but he used to be very strict on the self-defense part. This is what the west and Christianity did not understand. Mohammad used to encourage his people to fight the enemies if they started to fight. But, Osama bin Laden uses verses from the Quran that supports and fits his holy war with ignoring the other verses that can explain the teaching of Islam about the Jihad. Osama bin Laden made it confusing to the West by convincing the West that what he is doing is what Islam teaches and that people in the Middle East supports him. This confusion about the meaning of the Jihad can easily be one of the reasons of the conflict between the two civilizations.
The way Muslim women is expected to dress in Islam are different than what the West are used to. Women in Islam are supposed to wear the Hijab, which is a cover on the hair and sometimes the face. The way the media connected the Muslim women with the Hijab and the terrorist organization made the Muslim women look dangerous to the West. The West looks at any lady with a Hijab as a person who is involved with the terrorists. The confusion became even worst after watching ladies in Palestine wearing the Hijab and recoding videos about them ready to commit suicide attacks in Israel. But, Muslims argue that the reason for the women wearing the Hijab is to cover their bodies and to be less noticeable and attractive in public.
Marriage in Islam is a little bit different of what the Christianity teaches. Marriage in Islam is close to what Christianity teaches expect for the ability to marry up to four women. Christianity can see the practice as a very sinful one. The reasons of this rule are not clear to the West. This practice will make people in the west feel that Muslims and the beliefs of Muslims are different, which can be one of the reasons of the conflict. But Aslan Argues that this practice; multiple marriage, is for a good reason. Back in Mohammad’s time, men were always sent to war leaving a lot of women behind. This caused more women than men, and women in Islam, especially in Mohammad’s time, were expected to be married.
The way Muslims see Jesus Christ and Christianity could be very sensitive and unacceptable for Christians and the west. Islam believes that Jesus Christ is just a prophet who came to this world and died just like any other prophet. According to Brown” When the Qur’an mentions Jesus (he appears more than any other prophet) it seldom neglects to remind us that he is not God’s son, that he never claimed to be God’s son, and that Christians blaspheme by saying so” (Brown, 58). These judgments that the Qur’an mentions several times, can be very offensive to every Christian. . This is a very good reason that could keep the distance between the West and Islam.
The whole Islamic Culture is not clear to the west. Western civilization and Islamic civilization are different. But, it is not what caused the conflict. The media and the wrong understanding of I
1) "the west started questioning Islam and the Islamic society more than ever.
2) .People started to search (you have used capitals in the wrong places) for explanations of what caused (instead of causes)
3) The West started to question everything relating to Islamic culture.
4) on people from the Middle East (instead of Middle Eastern people)
5)not about the teachings of Islam (instead of teaching)
6) But individuals, (not– But, individuals,)
7) Al-Quadia (proper arabic form)
no doubt that the laws Islam follows ( you shouldn’t capitalize follows)
9) no doubt that the laws Islam follows could be strange to Westerners, such as Jihad or Holy War. (the way you phrased that sentence confuses me….try to rephrase whether in my way or maybe your own way)
uuuummmmm..well that was the proofreading for the first paragraph, maybe someone else will do the next…hope this helps =]
